There are a lot of people looking for accessible places to travel to or to spend the day at. Commonly the word “accessible” is often accompanied by wheelchair, this place is or is not “wheelchair accessible.” Searching for the particular blue and white sign loosely includes anyone with a physical disability, like those using manual and electric wheelchair, scooters, and arm crutches. Now-a-days almost anyone with a heart or obesity problem is deemed “physically disabled” and given a handicapped placard.

One group of people that are not considered physically disabled but often rely on the accessibility of a destination from the standards of a wheelchair user are parents with young kids, specifically strollers. Stroller carrying parents also want to be in an area that allows them to be comfortable pushing their children around and not worrying about getting a small wheel stuck in a crack or not having adequate space to maneuver. As one mother says, “you just don’t think about it until you have a stroller.” Those in wheelchairs feel the exact same way, until you walk in their shoes so to speak. When there is a place deemed to be wheelchair accessible, parents with strollers can count on factors like smoothly paved sidewalks, curb cutouts, ramps, elevators, and large handicapped friendly restrooms; accessible aspects that any wheelchair user or physically challenged person relies on to provide independence and comfort.

Even though parents with strollers and wheelchair users are different in many obvious ways, they may be the closest kind of people who “have a glimpse into what it’s like to use a wheelchair” as the mother with a stroller put it. The next time you have to wait for another elevator because it was full of strollers or the handicapped restroom because a mother his changing her child’s diapers take a deep breath because in many ways we are in the same boat.

Are you in a wheelchair, or do you know someone who is? If the answer is yes, you may be able to name countless activities they like to participate in, often just as well as you and me. Although many able bodied people and those new to life in a chair may not even realize it, there are countless activity options available for those in a wheelchair. Here is a list of some fun activities for those in a wheelchair:

Sports: Don’t just assume that because someone is in a wheelchair they can’t play sports. In fact, many people in wheelchairs still use sports as an outlet. For example, many wheelchair users love to play basketball, pool, bowling, swim & lift weights.

Videogames: Video games are a great outlet for those in a wheelchair. Especially for those who are unable or unwilling to play sports, video games can give wheelchair users a chance to scratch their competitive itch. Specifically, the Nintendo Wii is excellent!

Camping: Everybody loves the outdoors, and wheelchair users are no exception. Most campsites have wheelchair accessible spots just make sure you call ahead. Possible fun activities include fishing, hiking (if there are accessible trails) and swimming.

Art: Wheelchair users have a unique vantage point of the world, and it can often lead to great photography. Likewise, many people in wheelchairs are forced to adapt their other senses, and many develop unique artistic talents in the areas of painting, drawing and music.

Traveling: If you took a poll of wheelchair users, a majority would likely mention traveling as their favorite activity. Depending on where you are traveling, make sure you plan ahead and do research on possible wheelchair traveling locations.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinters for Community Transport

People living in the borough or Wandsworth have just been provided with a brand new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter minibus to help the less able to get to the shops.

The LWB 313Cdi is driven by Mercedes’ Euro 5 four cylinder diesel, rated at 129hp Euro 5.

Originally supplied as an âover the weight’ panel van at 3850kg GVW by south London dealer SG Smith. Ithe conversion was carried out by Stanford Coachworks.

The mobility specialist has fitted 10 individual seats in the passenger compartment, taking the total number of seats, including the driver’s, to 13. There is also space for a wheelchair â access for wheelchair users is via a Passenger Lift Services cassette lift, which is installed beneath the floor at the rear of the vehicle. Up to eight of the passenger seats can be quickly and easily removed, leaving additional room for four more wheelchairs.

Other features include non-slip flooring, handrails in high-visibility yellow which are connected to the fold-out step at the side of the minibus, and integral âall age’ seat belts, which negate the need for child or booster seats when transporting youngsters.Â Â Â

Wandsworth Community Transport provides mobility for around 350 groups â among them churches, schools, retirement and sheltered homes, and lunch clubs â as well as some 1,700 elderly and disabled individuals. Users pay a fare, but this is heavily subsidised by the local council and other contributors.

The charity lays on outings and day trip visits to the coast and other places of interest. But its day-to-day work entails collecting clients from their homes across the borough and taking them to local shopping centres, where they are met and, if necessary, accompanied by representatives of the Shopmobility scheme.

Managing Director Manuel Button leads a team of 35 staff, as well as scores of volunteers. “We provide a vital lifeline for people who might otherwise be housebound,” he explained. “It allows them to get out, meet friends and enjoy themselves, as well as undertake routine tasks such as shopping which the rest of us take for granted.”

Mr Button continued: “We probably buy three wheelchair-accessible minibuses every couple of years and have been gradually phasing out our older, non-Mercedes vehicles and replacing them with Sprinters â the introduction of our latest vehicle marks the completion of this process.

“We have been very happy with the quality and reliability of our Sprinters, while the drivers particularly like the smooth power delivery and the automatic gearbox that Mercedes-Benz offers as a standard factory option. Clients have also complimented us many times, on how comfortable the ride is.”

Wandsworth Community Transport’s Sprinters are maintained in SG Smith’s Sydenham workshops.

Assessing Needs In The Mobility Scooter Decision Making Process

Since their invention in the early 60’s, mobility scooters have advanced in both capabilities and popularity. The advances have resulted in a full slate of quality choices requiring a full review of options, needs, and optimal solutions for each personal situation to ensure that the vehicle of choice suits the needs of the buyers in the most cost effective manner possible.

The following is a summary review of personal mobility scooters descriptions as well as the strengths, weaknesses, and considerations to be taken for each option.

Personal Mobility Scooters:

Personal Mobility Scooters are designed for use by people with less severe mobility limitations such as such as arthritis, endurance or fatigue issues, and minor back problems. These users can typically sit comfortably for long periods of time with minimal back support and can walk under their own power.

The mobility scooters allow for lower cost mobility without the psychological bearing of being confined to a wheelchair. The typical mobility scooter users do not see themselves as wheelchair users at all. Personal mobility scooters can be divided into three separate categories:

* Compact scooters – These are considered to be the lightest duty scooters with relatively short battery life and limited range. For situations where storage or transportation options are limited, these scooters fold down to allow for placement in smaller areas whether in the house, car, or van.
* Three wheel scooters – These models are best suited for use on level ground and activities such as shopping due to their tight handling and turning radius in close quarters.
* Four wheel scooters – These models are built to heavier specifications and can carry up to 500 pounds. The 4 wheel design of these scooters offers more stability, longer battery life, and heavy duty mobility than the three wheel mobility scooters. One disadvantage of the 4 wheel scooter is that the turning radius is much wider than the 3 wheel, making it somewhat inconvenient to operate in grocery stores or retail locations.

Built for users without major mobility issues, steering and control of electric mobility scooter is done via handlebars much like those seen on bicycles. Top speeds average around 8 miles per hour, with higher power 4 wheel models being suitable for road use, uneven terrain, and hills.
